CSS
<style type="text/css">
table{width: 500px; height: 300px}
td{background-color: #546dae}
</style>

HTML
<table>
<tr><td colspan="2" rowspan="2"></td><td></td><td></td><td></td></tr>
<tr><td></td><td></td><td></td><td></td></tr>
<tr><td></td><td></td><td></td><td></td></tr>
<tr><td></td><td></td><td></td><td></td></tr>
</table>

Hi, I have this table in which I'm using colspan and rowspan. Aren't those attributes supposed to delete cells?

No, they dont delete anything. They just make a cell "bigger" than usual as many rows or columns as stated.

Maybe what you had on mind was:
<table>
<tr><td colspan="2" rowspan="2"></td><td></td><td></td></tr>
<tr><td></td><td></td></tr>
<tr><td></td><td></td><td></td><td></td></tr>
<tr><td></td><td></td><td></td><td></td></tr>
</table>
