Hi, im planning to make a website with four divisions, one for the header, the footer, the navigation bar and the content. I have 3 basic questions:
- what resolution should i take as standard
- what dimensions for each of my four areas would be best
- an is it possible to mix % dimensions with px?
Thank you.

1.- 800 x 600
2.- Header no more than 200px because you will have the navigation on one side, navigation around 150 px width is fine, content at least 500px (remember that users prefer to scroll down than to the sides) and footer of 150px is good.
3.- Yes you can mix percentages and fixed dimensions. For example, i would suggest to keep the conten area width fixed and its height in percentages, like this
style="width: 500px; height: 100%;"

i agree, just let me add this. if you change the vertical navigation bar for a dropdown menu you shouldnt care for the header height. in fact, must users expect to scroll down, so dont take pains regarding the header size.
