Stop Windows from hiding file extensions

By default, Windows (from Win2K to Win7) hides the extensions of known file types. This makes it hard to properly create, rename and/or save text files with not-so-standard extensions, like .html, .css, .js, .php, and .sql.

In further tutorials you will be using most of these extensions, so this is a good time to change your Windows settings.

  1. Open any explorer window (MyComputer, MyDocuments, MyPictures, etc.).
  2. Go to the Tools option on the top menu of the window.
If you don't see the top menu, click the Alt key and the menu should appear.
  3. Inside Tools, click on Folder Options...
  4. Go to the View tab
  5. Uncheck the Hide extensions for known file types option and click OK

Done! You are ready to continue with our web development tutorials.
